Description: Joy Nangala Brown paints the Yumari Jukurrpa, a story passed onto her by a man from the Pintupi Aboriginal group in the Western Desert. Yumari is a large collection of rocks in the Gibson Desert, strongly assosciated with the story of a forbidden love union between a Japaljarri man and a Nangala woman. Brown’s composition relates directly to the land, its features, and the plants and animals that live on it. In Yumari Dreaming, the concentric circles in Brown’s painting are representative of rock holes (‘warnirri’) in the area.
