Description: Born into a family of craftsmen, Moroccan artist Hicham Touarass began his artistic career as a weaver. His paintings preserve the traditional weaving custom of entwining life stories into a composition to create a narrative.
Touarass paints the ritual of the Gnaoua, commonly called lila (Arabian for ‘night’). The music played during the ritual has a repetitive, lively beat, and is used to call supernatural powers. Through lively patterns and brush strokes, Touarass invites us to join in the ceremony.
