Description: Aboriginal artist Alicka Napanangka Brown paints the Yarla Jukurrpa, the Dreamtime story from an area east of Yuendumu in Australia’s Northern Territory. Whilst Yarla refers to an edible bush potato found in the cracks of the ground, Jukurrpa is a term for the laws and stories of the land set by ancestral beings who created the world. The traditional, subtle iconography incorporated into Brown’s contemporary painting is used to depict elements of the jukurrpa, such as the vines and flowers found on the plant, and the digging sticks used by the women as they dug for the bush potato.
