Description: Langdon’s painting depicts the story of the Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush-tail Possum Dreaming). The story originates from a hill called Mawurrji, West of Yuendumu where a group of Janganpa ancestors once resided. When a daughter of one of the Nampijinpa women was promised to wed one of the Jupurrurla Janganpa men, the bride-to-be ran away with her mother and sisters. They were angrily pursued by the Jupurrurla man, and soon tracked down by the Mawurrji hill where he killed them all with a stone axe. Their bodies are now rocks there, and the site is used by Warlpiri people to perform young men’s initiation ceremonies. In this typical Warlpiri painting, Langdon uses traditional iconography to represent the jukurrpa: the E- like shapes depicting Janganpa tracks, and the concentric circles depicting trees in which the janganpa live and the sites at Mawurrji.
