Anime Souilmi

Morocco

Anime Souilmi (1987) is a contemporary Moroccan artist who paints with true North African resonance and energy. His artwork forms a strong relationship between tribal and contemporary art, taking on a mesmerizing and very playful quality. Souilmi’s tribal influence dominates the piece through a highly stylized composition and forms that are directly comparable to traditional African wood and stone carvings. The frequent repetition of these decorative forms within the piece brings about a sense of movement, creating an intense rhythmic pattern that embodies a deep-rooted African heritage. From one corner of the world to another, Souilmi also draws significant inspiration from the features and forms of Japanese pop art. Utilizing a similarly ‘super-flat’, postmodern aesthetic, he creates his own contemporary interpretation of Morocco’s rich and vibrant art history.
